Poverty, homelessness, and a lack of resources do not stop periods.

Anyone that’s ever had a period knows menstrual hygiene products are an expensive yet unavoidable necessity. For a considerable portion of the population, stigma, social, cultural, economic, and political barriers surrounding menstruation prevent easy access to such products

The Satanic Temple and our Congregation in Houston recognize menstruation as a normal biological process and strives to address disparities in access to relevant products.

What is Period Poverty

Period poverty refers to the lack of access to menstrual hygiene products due to financial burdens posed by the high cost of menstrual supplies faced by those with financial constraints & those struggling with increased economic vulnerability.

Who Is Affected By Period Poverty?

Period Poverty is a global challenge affecting over 526 million people worldwide. In the U.S. over 25 million menstruating idividuals struggle with some level of poverty.

Those who most often struggle with period poverty are women and girls in lower-income brackets, students, transgender and nonbinary individuals, as well as those currently incarcerated.

It doesn’t help matters that 35 states in the U.S. tax menstrual hygiene products as luxury items, falling under the category of “non-essential goods”

How will my donations be used?

All donations made between August 1 and September 15, 2022 will go to Houston-area LGBTQIA+ friendly community organizations to help those facing socioeconomic struggles receive the products they need. Please, stick to items on our wishlists to avoid any donations that these centers cannot use being thrown away.

So, what's the deal with menstrual cups?

Menstrual cups are great, in theory, for the environment, but require access to clean water and a level of hygiene that may not be available for all individuals experiencing period poverty. Think twice before shaming someone for not using a menstrual cup.
